If you burn wood, tell us how often and whether you have seen embers or soot on the roof or in the gutters. That shapes the spark arrestor screen we recommend.

This page covers the Town of Springdale in Lexington County, not the Springdale community in Lancaster County.
The Town of Springdale describes itself as centrally located between the Columbia Metropolitan Airport and the City of Columbia, with an area of four square miles and a population of nearly 3,000, and names Platt Springs Road (Highway 602) as a main route. A town that size usually means a short call to Town Hall answers local questions. Lexington County's Lexington County Building Permits page lists 803-785-8130 for permit questions, and the Town can tell you what applies inside its limits. Check with the office for your address before authorizing work.
Spark arrestor caps
A spark arrestor is the screen around a chimney cap that catches embers rising from a wood fire. Without it, a hot ember can land on shingles, in a gutter full of dry leaves, or on a deck. The cap's hood also keeps rain out, but the screen is what makes it a spark arrestor.
The 2021 International Residential Code model text in 2021 IRC Chapter 10, Chimneys and Fireplaces describes a spark arrestor in specific terms. The screen's net free area should be at least four times the net free area of the flue outlet. The material should resist heat and corrosion at least as well as 19-gauge galvanized steel or 24-gauge stainless. Openings should block a sphere larger than half an inch but not one of three-eighths of an inch. The screen should be accessible and removable for cleaning.

Soot buildup
Wood smoke leaves soot and creosote on everything it passes, including the cap screen. On a fireplace that burns often, the screen can glaze over until smoke has trouble getting out. The first sign may be smoke spilling into the room near the top of the fireplace opening.
That is why the code calls for a removable screen. A screen that cannot come off has to be cleaned in place, which is harder to do well. During a sweep, the technician checks and cleans the cap. If the mesh is too fine, it clogs faster, which is one reason we do not use window screen or hardware cloth on a chimney. Burning dry, seasoned wood also leaves less buildup than wet wood. Wet wood smolders, and the cooler smoke condenses into sticky deposits that glaze the screen faster.

Choosing metal
Stainless steel is our usual choice for a spark arrestor cap because it resists rust and heat and keeps its shape. Copper looks good on brick and weathers to a dark patina, but it costs more and the choice is mostly about appearance. Galvanized steel meets the minimum but rusts sooner, especially where soot and rain sit on it.

Not for gas vents
No. A gas appliance vent takes a listed vent cap under the fuel gas rules in 2021 IRC Chapter 24, Fuel Gas, not a spark arrestor screen. Putting mesh on a gas vent can block exhaust. If your chimney has both a fireplace flue and a gas vent, each gets its own correct cap.
Pricing factors
For a Springdale spark arrestor cap, the price follows the flue size and shape, because a larger or rectangular opening needs a taller screen to keep enough open area. Material is the other big factor: stainless, copper or galvanized. A heavily glazed or damaged old cap may need removal work, and crown condition affects how the new cap is mounted. We quote after measuring.

The 2021 IRC model text describes spark arrestor screens on chimneys that have them. Either way, a screened cap is good practice on any wood-burning flue.
Soot near the chimney can come from an uncapped flue, a damaged screen, or heavy smoke from burning wet wood. A screened cap helps contain particles, and a sweep shows how much creosote is building up. Call 864-727-7460 and we will look.
Have it checked at every chimney sweep. If you burn often, ask for the screen to be cleaned each time. Smoke coming back into the room is a sign it may be clogging between sweeps.
No. This page is for the Town of Springdale in Lexington County, between the Columbia airport and Columbia. Lancaster County has a separate Springdale community.
No. Leaves, branches and paper flare up and push embers and hot gases up the flue faster than a screen is meant to handle. Burn only dry, seasoned firewood in a fireplace.
The rule is the same: screen open area at least four times the flue outlet area. A square or rectangular tile has a larger opening than a round one of similar width, so the cap often needs a taller screen. We calculate it from the measured tile.
The 2021 IRC model text sets a floor for spark arrestor screens: heat and corrosion resistance at least equal to 19-gauge galvanized steel or 24-gauge stainless steel. Heavier material holds up longer to wind and animals. We list the material on the quote.
