Odd sizes
Store chimney caps come in a handful of standard sizes for common clay tiles. A flue that is larger, rectangular, oval, or has tiles that are chipped and out of square may not fit any of them. Forcing a too-small cap onto a large tile, or clamping a cap onto a broken edge, leaves gaps and loose fastening.
For an odd flue, we have three choices.
The measurement comes first. We record the outside dimensions of each tile, how far it projects above the crown, and the size of the crown if a top-mount cap is likely.
Clamps across a range of tile sizes. Works when the tile is sound and within range.
Covers the whole top regardless of tile shape. Anchored to the crown.
Built to the measured tile or crown size when nothing standard fits.

Open area
A cap sized correctly should not hurt draft. The 2021 International Residential Code model text in 2021 IRC Chapter 10, Chimneys and Fireplaces describes a spark arrestor screen with a net free area at least four times the net free area of the flue outlet. On a large flue, that means a taller screen or a bigger hood, because the cap has to pass more smoke. A small cap squeezed onto a large flue can fall short of that ratio.
The same code text uses the word cap for the masonry crown, the sloped top with a drip edge. If the crown is cracked or flat and holding water, a top-mount cap anchored to it may need crown repair first. We tell you before ordering anything.

Mixed flues
Not as a rule. A gas appliance vent needs a listed vent cap under the fuel gas rules in 2021 IRC Chapter 24, Fuel Gas. On a chimney with a fireplace flue beside a furnace or water heater flue, we may fit a top-mount cap that leaves the gas vent's listed cap in place, or treat each opening separately. We never put screen over a gas vent.
Before replacing
Replace a cap when the mesh has rusted through, the hood is bent toward the flue, or the clamps cannot hold. Refastening is fine when the metal is sound and only the screws have loosened. Patching a rusted screen with wire or tape leaves weak spots, so a holed screen means a new cap. South Carolina rain does not stop for a season; the South Carolina State Climatology Office describes rainfall spread through the year, so a cap with holes keeps letting water in every month.
Pricing factors
Odd flues are the main cost factor in Oak Grove. A stock cap on a common tile costs least; an adjustable cap, a top-mount cap over the crown, or a made-to-measure cap each cost more. A cracked crown under a top-mount cap adds masonry repair. The flue count and material finish the list. We quote after measuring.

Store caps fit common tile sizes, and many chimneys have larger, rectangular or damaged tiles. A cap that does not grip the tile firmly can blow off or leave gaps. We measure and recommend an adjustable, top-mount or made-to-measure cap.
Longer than a stock cap, because it is built after measuring. Ask about timing when you get the quote. A temporary measure is not appropriate for a flue in use, so keep the fireplace unused if the flue is open and wet.
No. Oak Grove is a Census Designated Place in unincorporated Lexington County. Many addresses there have a Lexington mailing address, but the county handles local rules.
Not safely until the crown is sound. A top-mount cap is anchored into the crown, and a cracked crown can let the anchors loosen. We explain the problem and quote crown repair first if it is needed.
Yes. Each flue gets its own measurement and a note of what it serves. Even when one cap will cover several tiles, the tallest tile and the largest opening decide the cap height and open area.
A clamp-on cap needs enough tile to grip, usually more than a couple of inches. A very short tile is a common reason to choose a top-mount cap anchored to the crown instead. In some cases the tile can be extended as part of masonry work, which we would quote separately.
Yes, ask for the measured flue sizes with the quote. That lets you or anyone else compare the cap size to the chimney before ordering.
