Tell us whether your fireplace damper closes tightly. If it is rusted, warped or stuck open, a cap with a built-in damper at the top of the flue may be worth discussing.
Seven Oaks is an unincorporated community, so your mail may say Columbia. The street address is what we need.

Top-sealing dampers
A top-sealing damper is a cap and a damper in one. A spring-loaded plate sits on top of the flue under the cap and is opened or closed by a cable that runs down to the firebox. When it is closed, it seals the flue at the top, so rain, animals and outside air stay out even when the fireplace is not in use.
Homeowners ask about one for three reasons: the old throat damper above the firebox no longer closes, they feel cold or hot air coming down the chimney, or they want to stop the smell of soot on humid days. A standard screened cap does none of those things; it covers the flue but leaves it open.
A damper cap is only for a fireplace flue. It does not go on a gas furnace or water heater vent, which needs a listed vent cap under 2021 IRC Chapter 24, Fuel Gas. On a gas log fireplace, a damper has to stay open or be blocked open according to the appliance rules, so we look at your setup before recommending one.

Measuring
A clamp-on cap grips the outside of a clay flue tile. A top-sealing damper usually mounts on the top of the tile with a seal and is held by the cap or a frame. Either way the tile has to be sound. A cracked or loose tile is repaired or the plan changes before anything is mounted.
The cap's screen has to leave enough room for smoke. The 2021 International Residential Code model text in 2021 IRC Chapter 10, Chimneys and Fireplaces describes a spark arrestor screen with an open area at least four times the flue outlet and mesh openings between three-eighths and one-half inch, removable for cleaning. That last point matters with a damper cap too, because the sweep needs to get past it.

Rain all year
South Carolina has no dry season to wait out. The South Carolina State Climatology Office describes rain distributed through the year with peaks in March and July. An open flue on a home in Seven Oaks takes rain in every month, and water reaching a steel damper plate rusts it, which is often how a throat damper stops closing in the first place.
That chain is why a cap and a damper often come up in the same conversation. If your damper is already rusted, a top-sealing damper cap covers both problems at once. If it still works, a standard screened cap protects it.

Pricing factors
In Seven Oaks the biggest cost difference is between a standard screened cap and a top-sealing damper cap, which has more parts and a cable that runs to the firebox. The flue size, the condition of the clay tile, and the material also change the quote. If the tile is cracked or loose, that has to be addressed before anything is mounted. We quote after measuring.
What we do
We ask how the damper works now and what you are trying to fix.
Tile size, crown condition, and which flue serves which appliance.
Standard cap, damper cap, or vent cap for each opening, with a quote.
The cap or damper is fastened and, for a damper cap, the cable is tested from the firebox.

It does more, but only for a wood or masonry fireplace flue. A damper cap seals the flue when the fireplace is not in use and still keeps animals and rain out. A regular screened cap is simpler and leaves the flue open, which is fine if the existing damper closes well.
A closed top-sealing damper can reduce air moving up or down an unused chimney. We do not promise a dollar figure, because savings depend on the house, the old damper and how often you burn. It mainly helps when the old damper no longer seals.
Yes, a top-sealing damper has to be open before any fire, the same as a throat damper. The handle or cable sits in the firebox. Lighting a fire with it closed fills the room with smoke, so ask the technician to show you how it works after installing.
No. Seven Oaks is a Census Designated Place in unincorporated Lexington County, even if your mailing address says Columbia. County offices handle local rules for your address.
Usually, yes. The cable and handle can be replaced without removing the whole cap in many designs. Tell us the brand if you know it, and we check before ordering parts.
Yes, but each fireplace flue needs its own damper plate sized to its tile, and the cables run to separate handles. A furnace or water heater flue beside them never gets a damper. Ask the technician to point out which handle works which flue.
