Start Your Lexington Chimney Cap Request

Many people use "Lexington" for the town and for the whole county around it. The cap work is the same, but the office you would call about local rules is not, so the full street address matters.

Tell us what is venting through the chimney: a wood fireplace, a gas log set, a furnace, or a mix. That decides which cap goes on each opening.

Town or county

Who Do I Ask About Chimney Cap Rules in Lexington, SC?

Lexington is an incorporated town, and the county carries the same name. Before any chimney cap work, figure out which government covers your address.

The Census Bureau lists Lexington town as an incorporated place inside Lexington County. Addresses with a Lexington mailing address can sit inside town limits or out in unincorporated county land, and the two do not always line up with the ZIP code on your mail.

For the county side, the Lexington County Building Permits page sends permit applications and inspections through an online portal and lists 803-785-8130 for general building permit questions. If you want a firm answer, call the county number or the Town before we schedule, and we will work to whatever they tell you. Check with the office for your address before authorizing work.

This matters most when the cap job grows. A cap alone is small work. If the measurement shows a cracked crown or a chimney top that needs rebuilding, the scope moves into masonry repair, and the permit question is worth asking again.

Choosing the cap

What Kind of Chimney Cap Does a Lexington Home Need?

The right chimney cap depends on what the chimney is built from and what it vents. We sort Lexington chimneys into three groups when we quote a cap.

For wood-burning flues, the 2021 International Residential Code model text in 2021 IRC Chapter 10, Chimneys and Fireplaces describes a spark arrestor screen with a net free area at least four times the flue outlet, mesh openings between three-eighths and one-half inch, and a cap that can be removed for cleaning. We size to that standard so the cap does not choke the draft.

Brick chimney, clay flue tiles

A stainless cap that clamps to each tile, or one top-mount cap over the whole crown when two or more tiles sit close together.

Framed chase with siding

A chase cover sealed over the top of the box, plus the termination cap made for the metal chimney pipe that comes through it.

Gas appliance vent

A listed vent cap matched to the vent pipe size. Never a homemade screen, and never a wood-fireplace mesh cap swapped in.

Sided chases

How Is a Chase Cover Different From a Chimney Cap?

A chase cover is the flat or sloped metal lid on a framed chimney box. A chimney cap sits on the flue pipe that passes through it. When people in Lexington call about a rusty chimney cap on a sided chimney, the rust is often on the chase cover: water pools on a flat galvanized lid, rusts it through, and runs down inside the chase.

Replacing that lid with a sloped or cross-broken cover lets water run off the edges. We measure the outside of the chase, check the condition of the wood framing at the top where we can see it, and match the collar to the pipe so the termination cap seats properly. If the wood under the old cover is soft, you will see it in our before anything else gets ordered.

Does a National Register Listing Affect a Lexington Chimney Cap?

A National Register listing by itself does not tell you whether a cap needs local approval. The State's National Register Sites in Lexington County, SC list for Lexington County includes houses and districts such as the Church Street Historic District, and the page notes that most National Register properties are privately owned and are not open to the public. It does not describe review rules for exterior work.

If your house is on that list or you know it sits in a district, ask the Town or County whether any local design review applies before choosing a cap style. Ask about cap style and finish at the same time.

Pricing factors

What Affects Chimney Cap Installation Cost in Lexington?

The quote for a Lexington chimney cap depends on what sits on top of the chimney. A single clay tile takes one clamp-on cap; two or more tiles may take one larger top-mount cap. On a sided chase, the cover is priced by the measured chase size, and the termination cap has to match the chimney pipe, so an uncommon chimney system can limit the choices. Soft framing under a rusted cover means carpentry before the new cover goes on. Copper costs more than stainless, and galvanized costs least. We quote after measuring.

Our process

What Happens During a Lexington Chimney Cap Installation?

01

Confirm the address

We check that we serve it and note town or county.

02

Inspect the top

The technician measures each flue, checks the crown or chase cover, and notes the fuel each opening serves.

03

Quote the cap

You get the cap type, material and size for each flue before work starts.

04

Install

The cap is fastened, draft clearance is checked. Ask whether completion photos can be arranged.

For crown repair, flashing or other work beyond the cap, see our South Carolina chimney services hub. The main chimney cap installation guide page goes deeper on materials and cap styles.

Can I buy a cap at a home store and have you install it?

We would rather measure first. Store caps come in set sizes, and a cap that is too small for the flue tile or has mesh that is too fine can restrict draft. If you already bought one, keep the box and receipt and send us the size; we will tell you whether it fits after we measure.

Why is there water in my fireplace after a storm?

A missing chimney cap is one common cause, but not the only one. Rain can also come through a cracked crown, failed flashing, or porous brick. We check the cap first because it is the quickest fix, then tell you if the crown or flashing also needs work.

Do gas logs need a chimney cap?

Yes, an open flue for a gas log set still needs to be covered against rain and animals. Vent-free gas logs are a different appliance with no flue. For a gas appliance with its own vent pipe, the code calls for a listed vent cap, so we match the cap to the vent rather than using a wood-fireplace cap.

Is a copper chimney cap worth it in Lexington?

Copper is a looks decision more than a performance one. Stainless steel resists rust well and costs less, while copper weathers to a brown or green patina that some owners of older brick homes prefer. Galvanized steel is cheapest but rusts sooner, especially where leaves sit wet on it.

How do I know which flue is the furnace flue?

Look at the chimney top from the yard and count the openings, then tell us what appliances you have. We confirm on the roof by checking which flue connects to which appliance. Please do not climb the roof to look; a photo from the ground is enough for the first call.
