Tell us the neighborhood along with the address. If the house is in an area the City is surveying for historic resources, we will suggest checking with planning staff before choosing a visible cap.
Note what the chimney vents: fireplace, gas logs, furnace or water heater.

Sumter's planning department serves both the City and Sumter County from one office, and it lists a Design Review Board and a historic preservation program.
The Sumter City-County Planning Department page lists the Sumter City-County Planning Department at 12 W. Liberty Street, with a Design Review Board, a Board of Zoning Appeals and a Planning Commission, and links to Historic Preservation. Among its active projects it lists a Historic Resource Survey of the West End, Greater Hampton Park and Mason Croft neighborhoods. Check with the office for your address before authorizing work.
What that means in practice: if you live in one of those neighborhoods or in a downtown or historic area, call planning staff at the number on that page before choosing a cap style. A survey documents buildings; it is not the same as a review requirement, so ask rather than assume.
Older brick chimneys
On an older brick chimney, start with the flue tile and crown. A clamp-on cap needs a sound clay tile to grip. A top-mount cap needs a sound crown to anchor into. If appearance matters, ask about profile and finish; in a reviewed area, ask planning staff before choosing.
The 2021 International Residential Code model text in 2021 IRC Chapter 10, Chimneys and Fireplaces sets the fit rules we use: a spark arrestor screen with an open area at least four times the flue outlet, openings between three-eighths and one-half inch, and a cap that can come off for cleaning. It also describes the masonry crown as the chimney's own cap, sloped with a drip edge. Both have to be right.

Newer homes
A sided chase takes a chase cover over the framed box and a termination cap on the metal chimney pipe, matched to that chimney system. A flat galvanized chase cover can hold water and rust; a sloped stainless cover sheds it. We measure the chase, the pipe and the storm collar before ordering. Each part is listed separately on the quote.

Flood maps
Not directly. The planning page says Sumter has over 4,000 parcels and 90,000 acres in Special Flood Hazard Areas that require special permitting actions, with the Zoning Administrator serving as floodplain manager. That governs building in flood zones, not chimney caps. We mention it because homeowners sometimes ask whether flood rules apply to roof work; for a cap, the question is a permit question for the planning department, not a flood one.
Gas vents
A listed vent cap. The fuel gas chapter of the model code in 2021 IRC Chapter 24, Fuel Gas has gas vents terminate with a listed cap or listed roof assembly. We never use a mesh fireplace cap or any improvised screen on a gas vent, and a gas appliance with a missing vent cap should stay off until checked.
Screened cap with spark arrestor.
Listed vent cap matched to the pipe.
Chase cover plus listed termination.
Pricing factors
In Sumter, the type of chimney sets the base of the quote: clay tiles on an older brick chimney, or a chase cover, storm collar and termination on a sided chase. Material and finish come next. If planning staff have requirements for a home in a reviewed area, that can affect which products fit. Crown repair, roof height and pitch can add to the job. We quote after measuring.

The planning department lists a Design Review Board and a historic preservation program but does not mention chimney caps. Call planning staff with your address before work if your home is in a historic or downtown area.
A survey records historic buildings; by itself it does not tell you a review is required. The City lists a survey of the West End, Greater Hampton Park and Mason Croft neighborhoods. Ask planning staff whether anything applies to your address.
Both use the same Sumter City-County Planning Department, according to its page. Your address still decides which other services apply. Send the full address when you contact us.
Yes, many stainless caps come with a black powder-coated finish from the factory. Finish is a matter of preference, and in a reviewed area a question for planning staff. We include the finish on the quote.
Because a cap anchored into a cracked crown can loosen, and water coming through a cracked crown will not stop with a new cap. We check the crown and tell you what we see. The decision stays yours.
Yes. Ask for the product sheet of the cap we quote, including its finish. If you are checking with planning staff about appearance, that sheet is useful to share with them. Ordering waits until you approve.
It can help a little by keeping rain out of the flue, because wet soot smells stronger. A top-sealing damper cap does more, since it closes the flue when the fireplace is not in use. A sweep removes the soot that causes the smell.
Yes, when it is cracked, loose or missing. The storm collar sheds water from the hole where the chimney pipe passes through the chase cover. Ask about the collar when a new chase cover is quoted, since it needs a sound seal too.
