Single-flue cap
Clamps or screws to one clay tile. Good when one tile projects cleanly and the crown is sound.

Give us the street address first. Columbia city limits cross two counties, and a few addresses sit on the City's historic landmarks list, so the address tells us more than the ZIP code does.
Then tell us what you can see from the yard: how many flue openings, whether the chimney is brick or a sided chase, and whether a cap is missing, bent, rusted or rattling in the wind.

Check the address before choosing a cap style. The City of Columbia runs a design review process for its historic districts and landmarks, and a visible chimney top is part of the roofline.
The City's City of Columbia Historic Preservation page says preservation staff administer Certificates of Design Approval for alterations to historic buildings and sites, and that design review for the historic districts is handled by the Historic Preservation Design Review Commission with staff. If your property is a landmark or sits in a district, call preservation staff before we order a cap and let them tell you. Check with the office for your address before authorizing work.
The City also publishes a City of Columbia Historic Landmarks List, updated August 2026. It lists properties by street address and landmark date. Blanding Street alone has more than a dozen entries, many landmarked on 11/24/1975. If your address appears on that list, ask preservation staff about the cap's style and finish before choosing one. We do not predict what reviewers will approve.

Measuring the flue
A chimney cap is sized to the flue opening, not to the house. On a masonry chimney we measure the outside of each clay flue tile that projects above the crown, note how far it sticks up, and check whether the crown is solid enough to anchor a cap that covers the whole top.
The 2021 International Residential Code model text in 2021 IRC Chapter 10, Chimneys and Fireplaces sets out what a cap with a spark arrestor screen should do. The screen's net free area should be at least four times the net free area of the flue outlet, the mesh openings should stop a sphere larger than half an inch but not block one of three-eighths of an inch, and the cap should come off for cleaning.
The same code text uses the word cap for the masonry crown, the sloped concrete, metal or stone top with a drip edge. If the crown is cracked and holding water, a new flue cap will not fix it, and we will say so before you pay.
Cap styles
Clamps or screws to one clay tile. Good when one tile projects cleanly and the crown is sound.
One hood over two or more tiles, anchored to the crown. Common on wider chimneys that vent a fireplace and a furnace.
A sheet-metal top for a sided chase, with a listed termination cap on the metal flue pipe.
Gas or wood
A gas vent needs its own listed cap. The fuel gas chapter of the model code, 2021 IRC Chapter 24, Fuel Gas, has gas vents terminating with a listed cap or listed roof assembly, so a mesh rain cap made for a wood fireplace is the wrong part for a B-vent. Some Columbia chimneys carry a furnace or water-heater flue beside the fireplace flue. We look at each opening and match it to what is venting below.
If a gas appliance flue is open or its cap has blown off, keep the appliance off until it has been checked, and do not cover that flue with screen, foil or anything improvised. A blocked gas vent can push combustion gases back into the house.
Rain and wind
Replace a chimney cap when the screen has rusted through, the hood has bent toward the flue, the fasteners have loosened, or the cap is gone. Columbia has no true dry season to wait for. The South Carolina State Climatology Office describes rainfall spread through the year with peaks in March and July. A missing cap lets that rain fall straight onto the smoke chamber and damper, which rusts the metal and soaks the masonry from the inside.
City Public Works lists a Dominion Energy tree trimming program and a Treasured Trees program for street trees. If a limb hangs over your roof, tell us. Leaves pack into the mesh, and a branch strike can knock a cap sideways. We do not trim trees.

Pricing factors
Four things move a Columbia chimney cap quote: how many flues the chimney has, the size of each clay tile, whether one multi-flue cap or separate caps make sense, and the material. A cracked crown that has to be repaired before a top-mount cap can be anchored adds masonry work. If the property is a landmark and staff ask for a particular style or finish, that choice can change the product and its cost. Roof height and pitch change setup time. We quote after measuring.
What happens
Send the address and a photo taken from the ground. We check service for the location and whether the property is on the landmark list.
A technician measures each flue, checks the crown and notes the fuel each flue serves.
We recommend a cap for each opening: mesh size, material, single or multi-flue, or a listed gas vent cap.
The cap is fastened and checked for draft clearance. Ask whether completion photos can be arranged.

Call the City's permitting office for a firm answer. If the property is a designated landmark or in a historic district, also ask preservation staff about a Certificate of Design Approval before we order the cap.
Sometimes, but only when both flues are suited to the same cap. A wood or masonry fireplace flue can share a multi-flue top-mount cap with another solid-fuel flue. A gas appliance vent needs its own listed termination, so we often treat it separately even when it shares the chimney.
It changes who you call about local rules, not how the cap is sized. The Census Bureau lists Columbia city in both Richland and Lexington counties, so your county services may differ from a neighbor's across the line. Give us the full address and we will plan the work the same way.
A screened cap with mesh between three-eighths and one-half inch keeps birds, squirrels and raccoons out of the flue when it is fastened tight. It will not remove an animal that is already inside. If something is nesting in the flue now, tell us before the cap goes on, and we will discuss whether wildlife removal comes first.
A stainless or copper cap usually outlasts a galvanized steel cap, which rusts sooner. Rust streaks on the brick below the cap are a reason to call 864-727-7460.
