Midlands rainfall

Does a Lugoff Chimney Need a Cap if the Midlands Are Drier?

Yes. The NOAA and NCICS NOAA/NCICS State Climate Summary, South Carolina names Wateree in the Midlands as the driest part of the state, with annual totals under 39 inches, compared with more than 80 inches near Lake Jocassee in the mountains. Kershaw County describes the Wateree River as about 75 miles long and a tributary of the Santee. Drier for South Carolina is still plenty of rain on an open flue.

The South Carolina State Climatology Office adds that rain falls through the whole year with no wet or dry season. A chimney in Lugoff without a cap takes water down the flue in every month, onto the damper and into the smoke chamber. A cap with a solid hood stops the rain that falls straight in. Wind-driven rain is a different matter, and a wider hood overhang helps there, along with a crown that sheds water.

Two kinds of cap

What Is the Difference Between a Chimney Cap and a Chimney Crown?

Two parts of a masonry chimney get called a cap, and mixing them up leads to the wrong repair.

The 2021 International Residential Code model text in 2021 IRC Chapter 10, Chimneys and Fireplaces uses "cap" for the crown and describes it with a drip edge and a caulked bond break around the flue liners. Its section on spark arrestors covers the metal screen: an open area at least four times the flue outlet and openings between three-eighths and one-half inch. A chimney needs both parts working. When only one is fixed, water usually finds the other. A sound crown with a missing cap still lets rain fall down the flue, and a new cap on a cracked crown still lets water into the brick.

Flue cap

The metal hood and screen that sits on the clay flue tile. Keeps rain, animals and embers out of the flue opening.

Crown

The sloped concrete, metal or stone top of the chimney around the flue tiles. Sheds water off the top of the brick.

Crown problems

How Do I Know if My Lugoff Chimney Crown Needs Repair?

From the ground, look for brick that is darker near the top, white staining on the face of the brick, or pieces of mortar in the gutter. Inside, look for water stains that appear after rain even though a cap is in place. Those signs point past the flue cap to the crown or flashing.

When we come out to install a cap, we look at the crown up close. Hairline cracks may only need sealing. Wide cracks, a flat crown that holds water, or a crown pulling away from the tiles mean repair before or along with the cap. If the crown is weak, we will not anchor a top-mount cap into it until it is fixed. You get either way.

Gas vents

What Cap Goes on a Lugoff Gas Furnace Flue?

A listed vent cap under the fuel gas rules in 2021 IRC Chapter 24, Fuel Gas, never a mesh cap and never anything improvised. If a gas vent cap is missing or crushed, keep the appliance off until it is checked.

Pricing factors

What Affects Chimney Cap Installation Cost in Lugoff?

A Lugoff quote depends on whether the job is a cap alone or a cap plus crown work. Sealing hairline cracks costs less than rebuilding a broken crown, and some products need curing time before a cap is anchored, which can mean a second visit. Flue count, tile size and material also change the price. We quote after measuring.

I have a cap but still get water in the fireplace. Why?

The water is likely coming from somewhere other than the flue opening: a cracked crown, failed flashing, or porous brick. A cap only covers the top of the flue. We check the other parts and explain what we find.

Can a crown be sealed instead of rebuilt?

Sometimes. Hairline cracks in an otherwise sound crown can be sealed with a product made for crowns. Wide cracks or a crown breaking apart need rebuilding. We decide after seeing it.

Is Lugoff part of Camden?

No. Lugoff is a Census Designated Place in unincorporated Kershaw County, separate from the City of Camden. County offices handle local rules for Lugoff addresses, so check with the county rather than the City.

What is a bond break around a flue tile?

It is a flexible joint between the crown and the clay flue tile so the two can move separately as they heat and cool. The model code describes a caulked bond break. Without one, the crown can crack where it meets the tile.

Should the cap and crown be done on the same visit?

Often that makes sense, because the cap may anchor into the crown and both need roof access. When the crown needs curing time after repair, the cap may go on afterward. We plan the order with you.

Why is there white staining on my chimney brick?

White staining is often efflorescence, salts carried to the surface as water moves through masonry. It suggests water is getting into the brick, which can come from a cracked crown, a missing cap or failed flashing. We look at all three during the visit and explain what we find.

Can a new cap be installed the same day as crown sealing?

Sometimes, depending on the sealant and the weather. Some products need time to cure before anything is anchored into the crown. We tell you whether the cap goes on the same day or at a return visit.
