Why Does a Wood Stove Chimney Need a Cap With a Screen?
A wood stove burns hot for long periods, and embers can ride the draft up the flue. A screened cap catches them. The 2021 International Residential Code model text in 2021 IRC Chapter 10, Chimneys and Fireplaces describes spark arrestor screens with openings that stop a half-inch sphere but pass a three-eighths-inch one, an open area at least four times the flue outlet, and a screen that comes off for cleaning. A stove chimney's cap screen gets soot buildup like any other, so it needs checking at each sweep. Burning dry, seasoned wood helps keep that buildup down.
A stove that smokes when the door is opened can point to a clogged cap screen, among other causes. If you notice that, stop using the stove until the chimney is checked. Smoke inside the house can carry carbon monoxide, so a working CO alarm near the stove is a sensible precaution.
