Tell us how close trees are to the chimney. A limb over the roof, or a tree that drops leaves and seed pods on it, changes which mesh and hood we suggest.
Add the address and what the chimney vents. We confirm service before scheduling.

In Forest Acres, the trees near your roof shape the chimney cap choice as much as the chimney does.
The City describes its forested character as what makes it unique, and its City of Forest Acres Tree Removal page calls trees a protected, vital and valuable part of the community. The City's parks page talks about neighborhood parks tucked along tree-lined residential streets in southern Forest Acres. For a chimney cap, that means leaves sitting on the mesh, limbs rubbing the hood, and seed pods packing into the screen.
A clogged screen chokes the draft. When leaves mat against a cap with fine mesh, smoke backs up the flue and can come into the room. The fix is a cap with mesh no finer than the code range, a hood wide enough that leaves slide off, and a check of the screen at each sweep. The 2021 International Residential Code model text in 2021 IRC Chapter 10, Chimneys and Fireplaces describes spark arrestor openings that stop a half-inch sphere but pass a three-eighths-inch one, and an open area at least four times the flue outlet. We stay inside that range on purpose.

Tree rules
Ask the City first. The tree removal page says a homeowner who cuts their own tree must still follow the ordinance and have an approved permit for trees the ordinance governs, and that trees approved for removal must be cut by a contractor licensed with the City of Forest Acres, not only with the state. The City says it approves more than 90 percent of applications on average and provides an information packet explaining when a permit is needed.
That page is about trees, not chimney caps, and we do not do tree work. We mention it because a limb rubbing the chimney top will keep damaging any cap we install. If a tree is the cause, the City's process is the place to start, and then the cap work makes sense.
Check with the office for your address before authorizing work.
Wind damage
A storm loosens a chimney cap in two ways: wind pulls at the hood until the clamps slip, and falling limbs knock the cap sideways. The City's parks page notes that Citadel Park was remodeled after Hurricane Helene damage and reopened in spring 2026, with dozens of new trees planted. Storms reach this part of Richland County.
After a big wind, look at the chimney from the ground. A cap leaning, missing, or sitting crooked on the tile should be checked before the next fire. If it serves a gas appliance and the vent cap is damaged, keep the appliance off and call. Do not climb up to straighten it; a loose cap on a wet roof is not worth the risk.

Options
These are the cap features we weigh for a Forest Acres chimney with trees nearby.
For a gas appliance vent, none of this applies the same way: the vent takes a listed cap under 2021 IRC Chapter 24, Fuel Gas, and we do not add screens to it.
Overhangs the screen so rain and leaves fall clear of the mesh.
Gives leaves and pine straw a slope to slide off instead of a flat surface to rest on.
Openings near the larger end of the range clog less while keeping out animals and embers.
Clamped or crown-anchored according to the chimney's condition and the product's instructions.
Holds up to wet leaves sitting against it better than galvanized.
Pricing factors
Trees change a Forest Acres quote in a few ways. A heavier stainless cap with a wider hood costs more than a basic galvanized cap. Limbs touching the chimney can mean waiting until tree work is done, and that work is separate from ours and may need a City permit. The flue count, tile sizes and crown condition still set the base of the quote, and a steep or crowded roof adds setup time. We quote after measuring.

Have the cap checked at each chimney sweep, and look at it from the ground after leaf drop in the fall. If smoke starts drifting into the room, a clogged screen is one possible cause. Do not go on the roof to clear it yourself; call 864-727-7460 instead.
Possibly, depending on the tree. The City's tree removal page says trees governed by the ordinance need an approved permit even if the homeowner cuts them, and the City provides an information packet that explains when a permit is needed. Check with the City before cutting.
A screened cap with a solid hood keeps pine straw and leaves out of the flue opening. Debris can still build up on top of the screen, so a pitched lid and regular checks help. The goal is a cap that sheds debris rather than catching it.
Light bends in a stainless hood can sometimes be corrected if the screen and clamps are intact. A crushed screen or cracked lid should be replaced, because gaps let animals in. We decide after seeing it up close.
The City says its roads are maintained by the South Carolina Department of Transportation, so ordinary street parking follows normal rules. If your driveway is the only safe spot for a ladder truck, let us know when booking.
