Boiling Springs is a Census Designated Place in Spartanburg County, not an incorporated town (Census Bureau 2020 place codes, South Carolina). It has no municipal building office, so building questions go to Spartanburg County. Spartanburg County staff can tell you what approval, if any, applies to your property before larger chimney work. A storm-damaged chimney often needs more than a cap, so that call is worth making early.
The community takes its name from a geyser; a South Carolina General Assembly bill text designates the site of the Boiling Springs geyser in Spartanburg County a State Historic Site. That history does not affect your chimney, and we mention it only so you know we are describing the right place.
Storms
Two kinds of storms do most damage statewide, according to NOAA's climate summary: tropical systems in summer and fall, and severe thunderstorms concentrated in late winter and spring, either of which can spawn tornadoes (NOAA/NCICS State Climate Summary: South Carolina). For a chimney cap, the risk is wind getting under a lid that is loose or corroded at its fasteners.
A cap that rattles in moderate wind is already loose. Screws can back out of a flue tile clamp, and a crown-mount cap can lose grip in crumbling mortar. Replacing a cap after it has blown off is usually more work than refastening or replacing it before it goes, and a falling cap can damage shingles or gutters on the way down.
Rattling heard from the living room on a windy night is often the first clue. Note when it started, then look up from the driveway in daylight for a lid sitting off-center.
Winter
The SC State Climatology Office notes that snow, sleet and freezing rain can occur from November to March and that measurable snowfall may occur one to three times a winter in all areas except the Lowcountry (SC State Climatology Office, South Carolina Climate). Ice is hard on thin mesh and on caps that are already loose.
A heavy-gauge stainless cap, firmly fastened, handles occasional ice better than light galvanized screen. Water that gets into cracks in a crown and freezes widens those cracks, which is another reason we check the crown when replacing a cap.

Attachment
Adjustable brackets grip the outside of a sound tile. Fasteners should be stainless so they do not rust loose.
Anchors into the crown with masonry fasteners. The crown has to be solid, or the anchors will not hold.
The cover screws to the chase framing at the sides; the termination attaches to the flue pipe according to the fireplace system.
Replacement choice
When a cap fails, replace it with one suited to the conditions that beat the old one. If the old cap blew off, look for heavier construction and more fastening points. If the screen rusted through, step up from galvanized to stainless mesh. If ice bent the lid, a hip-roof lid that sheds load is worth considering.
The replacement still has to fit the flue. Under the 2021 IRC, a spark arrestor's net free area must be at least four times the flue outlet's, so a sturdier cap cannot be a smaller one (2021 International Residential Code, Chapter 10 (R1003.9.1 caps, R1003.9.2 spark arrestors)). We measure before ordering.
If you have the old cap, keep it. Its size and mounting style help us confirm what fits.
Beyond the cap
A storm that takes a cap can also crack a crown, loosen flashing or knock bricks from the top course. Water stains appearing on a ceiling soon after a storm can point to flashing rather than the missing cap. We look at the whole chimney top when we come for the cap, and we tell you about anything else we find before quoting.
Price
Prices for storm repairs vary more than for planned work. Whether the old cap can be refastened, the new cap's style and metal, crown or chase damage from the storm, and any roof damage from a fallen cap all change the scope. We inspect and then price. See our main chimney cap installation guide page for cap styles and our South Carolina chimney services hub for related chimney repairs in South Carolina.

Discuss your chimney top before scheduling.

Hold off until it is replaced. An uncapped flue lets rain and animals in, and a wood fire without a spark arrestor can send embers onto the roof. Call 864-727-7460 to arrange a replacement.
Sometimes, if the cap and screen are in good shape and the tile or crown can hold new fasteners. If the metal is corroded or bent, replacement is the better choice.
Ice adds weight and can bend thin mesh or loosen fasteners that are already weak. Freezing water in crown cracks also widens them. A sturdy stainless cap on a sound crown handles occasional ice well.
Boiling Springs is unincorporated, so Spartanburg County is the contact. Ask the county about property-specific approval, especially if your project includes crown or chase repairs.
Keep the cap if you can find it safely on the ground, along with any brackets or screws that came down with it. Its size, mounting style and the condition of those fasteners help confirm a replacement and show how it failed. Do not climb up to retrieve pieces stuck on the roof.
That depends on your policy, and we cannot answer it for you. Ask your insurer. Ground-level photos of the damage and the storm date help with any claim.
