Individual flue caps
Each tile gets its own cap. This works when the tiles stand clear of the crown and are in good condition, and it keeps each flue's screen independent.

Count the flue openings if you can see them from the yard, and tell us what each one serves: fireplace, furnace, water heater or something you are not sure about.
Mention whether the top of the chimney is a concrete or mortar slab, a metal plate or bare brick. That surface decides how a cap can be attached.
864-727-7460 ↗Two kinds of cap
The word cap gets used for two different parts. Building code language describes the masonry top of a chimney as its cap: the 2021 International Residential Code says masonry chimneys shall have a concrete, metal or stone cap with a drip edge and a caulked bond break around any flue liners (2021 International Residential Code, Chapter 10 (R1003.9.1 caps, R1003.9.2 spark arrestors)). Most homeowners call that slab the crown.
The metal hood with a screen that sits above the flue is the part most people mean by chimney cap. It keeps out rain, animals and, as a spark arrestor, embers. On a brick chimney both pieces work together, and a new metal cap fastened to a crumbling crown will not last.
So when a Spartanburg homeowner asks for a cap, our first question is which one. If the crown is cracked, we will tell you before the metal cap goes on. Our South Carolina chimney services hub covers crown and masonry repair separately.
Several flues
A chimney with two or three flues needs a decision before anything is ordered: separate caps on each flue, or one cap over the whole top.
Each tile gets its own cap. This works when the tiles stand clear of the crown and are in good condition, and it keeps each flue's screen independent.
A single cap anchors to the crown and covers every flue. It needs a solid crown and enough open area that no flue is starved for draft.
If a furnace or water heater vents through the chimney, its termination may need a listed cap. We never improvise a screen over a gas vent.
The code sets the net free area of a spark arrestor at no less than four times the flue outlet's net free area. On a multi-flue top-mount cap, that rule is the reason size matters more than appearance.
City or county
Inside city limits, the City of Spartanburg's Building Inspections office sits under Development Services at 440 S. Church Street, and its Building Permits page lists the building official and permit specialists by name and phone (City of Spartanburg Building Permits (Building Inspections)). Properties outside the city fall under Spartanburg County instead.
Before work starts, a short call to Building Inspections or the county answers any approval question for your specific property. Crown rebuilds and chase reconstruction are larger jobs, and those are the projects to raise first. Keep the parcel number handy when you call either office.
If you know your home is designated, tell us and check with the city before choosing a visible cap style.
Weather
NOAA's state climate summary puts annual precipitation for most of the Upstate between 45 and 55 inches and lists severe thunderstorms, mainly in late winter and spring, and tropical systems in summer and fall as the main storm threats (NOAA/NCICS State Climate Summary: South Carolina). Wind-driven rain is what pushes water past a worn cap, and a loose cap is what a strong gust lifts off.
Spartanburg owners can do the first check from the street with a phone camera. Leaning hoods, missing lids and peeled-back screens all justify a roof-level look by a technician.

Materials
The code sets a floor for durability. Spark arrestor screens must resist heat and corrosion at least as well as 19-gauge galvanized steel or 24-gauge stainless steel. Above that floor, the metal is a choice between cost, lifespan and looks.
Galvanized steel is the budget option and the first to rust once its coating wears. Stainless steel is the common middle choice for fireplace flues. Copper costs more, darkens as it weathers, and is picked mostly for appearance on brick. Black powder-coated stainless suits owners who want the cap to disappear against a dark roof.
Whatever the metal, the fasteners should match it. Mixing copper with steel screws invites corrosion where they touch. We will explain the metal and fastening on the specific cap we propose.
Price
The number of flues, whether they share one cap, the metal, the crown's condition and any listed gas cap all change the scope. We measure first and price the actual work. For cap styles, materials and the questions to ask any installer, read our main chimney cap installation guide page.

Usually yes. The International Residential Code requires gas vents to terminate with a listed cap or listed roof assembly, so a generic fireplace screen is not a substitute. Tell us what each flue serves and we will plan accordingly.
It can be fastened, but it is a poor investment. A top-mount cap anchors to the crown, and water entering cracks keeps damaging the masonry under it. We will tell you if the crown needs attention first.
Flues added for different appliances often end at different heights. That makes a single top-mount cap harder to fit and can favor individual caps on each tile. We measure both before recommending one approach.
A screened cap with openings sized to code keeps birds and most animals out once installed. If something is nesting in the flue now, it has to be handled before capping. SCDNR places wildlife control responsibility on the property owner and lists licensed operators.
Check from the yard or street with binoculars or a phone zoom. A tilted hood, missing lid or bent screen means call 864-727-7460 for a roof-level look. Do not go onto the roof to check it.
