If you know roughly when the house was built or that it was once a mill house, mention it. Age does not decide the cap by itself, but it tells our technician what to look for at the top.
Send a photo taken from the street or yard. Count the openings you can see and note any metal pipe sticking out of the brick.

The Town of Lyman's own history describes a mill village that Pacific Mills built in 1927, with 375 homes for workers at the Lyman Printing and Finishing plant.
According to the Town of Lyman history (About Us), the mill sold those homes to individual owners in 1955. A house that has passed through many owners since then may have had a coal grate replaced, a gas heater added, or a fireplace closed off. Each change can alter what the chimney vents today, and that decides which cap is safe to install.
Whether a particular Lyman house still has an original chimney or a clay flue liner is something to confirm on site. The cap is chosen after we know what the flue does now.
Start with what the chimney does
Needs a screened cap that blocks embers and animals while leaving enough open area for the fire to draw. The 2021 International Residential Code, a model code, sets the screen's open area at four times the flue outlet or more.
If a furnace or water heater vents through an old masonry flue, the liner and termination have to suit that appliance. We check this first and do not cap over it with a wood-fire screen.
A flue you do not light still takes on rain and can attract birds. Before any cap goes on, we confirm nothing still vents into it and how the flue should stay ventilated; only then do we suggest a screened rain cap.
Older chimneys sometimes carry a flue for each floor. Each tile can get its own cap, or a single lid can span the crown if the tiles sit near each other and the slab is solid.

Crown first, then cap
Yes. The cap is fastened to the flue tile or to the crown, the masonry slab around the flue at the top of the chimney. The Chimney Safety Institute of America recommends that a crown project two inches beyond the brick on all sides so water drips clear of the walls. A crown that is cracked or crumbling gives a cap nothing solid to hold.
On an older chimney we look for a crown made of a thin mortar wash rather than a proper sloped crown, for flue tile that is loose or chipped, and for brick near the top that is spalling. When we find any of those, we explain whether to repair first or install the cap now. You decide; the cap order waits until you do.
From first call to finished cap
We review your photo and how the chimney is used, then explain likely cap options.
Each flue is measured, including any odd or out-of-square tile, and the crown condition is recorded.
We recommend a cap that matches the use and size, in a corrosion-resistant metal, and confirm the choice with you.
We anchor the cap against wind lift while keeping it easy for a sweep to remove later.
Paperwork questions
The town's rail trail page calls the area historic Lyman; that wording describes the town and is not, on its own, a design-review rule.
If your project includes masonry rebuilding or a liner, ask Town Hall at 81 Groce Road whether your scope needs approval. Addresses outside town limits go to Spartanburg County. Our South Carolina chimney services hub lists the other chimney repairs we discuss with South Carolina homeowners if the cap turns out to be one item among several.
Cost factors
The number and size of flues, whether flue tiles stand high enough for single caps, the metal you choose, roof pitch and height, and any crown repair needed before the cap can be secured. Odd-size or out-of-square tile may call for a full-crown cap instead of a stock single-flue cap.
A full-crown cap can cost more than a single-flue cap but can be the better fit when tiles are uneven or close together. We explain each factor that applies to your chimney, and what we would recommend and why, before any work is booked. Call 864-727-7460 or send the form with your photo to get started.
Caps, covers and access
Discuss your chimney top before scheduling.

Not automatically. The cap depends on what the chimney vents now and how its top is built, which can differ from house to house after decades of separate owners. We check the flue use and measure the top before recommending anything.
Possibly, but only after we confirm nothing still vents into it and how it should be ventilated. A flue you do not light still collects rain and can attract birds and animals. Once its status is clear, a screened rain cap can keep it dry.
We measure it and look for a cap made for that size, or we use a cap that covers the full crown. A cap that does not fit the tile can loosen in wind. Odd sizes take more time to source, and we tell you if that applies.
We can, but it may not last if the crown keeps breaking up underneath it. We show you the cracks and explain whether repair should come first. The choice is yours.
It may mean a gas appliance or a liner vents through that chimney. That opening needs a termination cap made for it, and a mesh screen should never be improvised over it. Tell us about the pipe when you call so we plan for it.
