Start Your Greer Chimney Cap Call With the Address

Greer is one of the few Upstate cities split between two counties, so the address tells us more than the city name does. Give us the full street address, then the chimney details.

After that we want to know what you see from the yard: a bare flue tile, a cap with a torn screen, a rusty metal top on a sided chase, or leaves piled at the top of the chimney.

Two counties

Chimney Cap Installation Across Greer's County Line

Census place records list Greer as an incorporated city in both Greenville County and Spartanburg County. City Hall is at 301 E. Poinsett Street. For a chimney cap, the split matters in one practical way: any question about local building rules goes to the office that covers your exact parcel, which may be the City of Greer or, just outside the limits, one of the two counties.

Check with the office for your parcel about property-specific approval. If you are also replacing a crown or rebuilding a chase, ask the office for your parcel before the work. Greenville County, for example, publishes its Building Safety permit information online (Greenville County Building Safety permits).

Historic status works the same way. Greenville County's historic preservation list includes the Pelham Mill Office at 2770 E. Phillips Road in Greer, which shows that individual properties near Greer are designated. That listing says nothing about your house, but if you own a designated property, check before changing anything visible on the roof.

Leaf season

How Do Leaves Affect a Chimney Cap in Greer?

The City of Greer runs a seasonal loose leaf collection that starts in early November and continues into February, which tracks when yards fill with leaves. Chimney caps catch some of them too.

That window overlaps the months fireplaces get used. A cap screen packed with leaves can restrict the draft and send smoke back into the room, and dry leaves sitting on a crown near a wood-burning flue are not something you want there either.

This is one reason we size screens carefully. The 2021 International Residential Code calls for spark arrestor openings no smaller than 3/8 inch and no larger than 1/2 inch, and the screen or cap has to be removable so it can be cleaned (2021 International Residential Code, Chapter 10 (R1003.9.1 caps, R1003.9.2 spark arrestors)). Mesh tighter than that clogs faster; mesh looser than that lets embers and small animals through.

If you notice smoke spilling into the room after the leaves come down, stop using the fireplace and call. Do not try to clear the screen from the roof yourself.

Framed chases

Chase Covers and Chimney Caps on Greer Homes With Factory-Built Fireplaces

Not every Greer chimney is brick. A factory-built fireplace vents through a metal flue pipe inside a framed, sided chase. The top of that chase has a flat or sloped metal cover with a collar for the pipe, and the pipe carries its own termination cap. When the cover rusts, water can run into the framing; when the termination cap is damaged, rain and animals reach the flue.

We treat those as two separate parts. Sometimes only the termination cap needs replacing. Other times the cover has rusted through and a new custom-sized cover is the real fix. The fireplace brand and model, usually on a plate inside the firebox opening or behind the lower grille, help us identify the correct termination.

Replacement signs

When Is It Time to Replace a Chimney Cap in Greer?

Some signs show from the driveway. A hood that sits crooked, a screen with a gap at one corner, orange rust bleeding onto a chase's siding, or a flue tile with nothing on top at all. Others show indoors: water in the firebox after rain, a musty smell in humid weather, twigs or nesting material falling onto the grate, or scratching sounds in the flue.

Age alone is not a reason. A well-fastened stainless cap with an intact screen can stay in service for a long time, while a painted steel cover may rust out sooner. What we look at is whether the cap still sheds water, still blocks animals and embers, and is still fastened firmly enough to survive a strong gust.

If you see a problem, photograph it from the ground and send it when you call. That photo often tells us whether the cap, the cover or the masonry is the first thing to check.

Cost drivers

What Sets the Price of a Greer Chimney Cap?

A replacement termination cap on a factory-built flue, a stainless single-flue cap on a clay tile and a custom chase cover are three different jobs with different material costs. Crown cracks, rusted cover seams and a steep roof each add time. We price the scope after measuring rather than quoting a flat number by phone.

Before you call, our main chimney cap installation guide page walks through stainless, copper and galvanized caps side by side. Crown, flashing and masonry work beyond the cap are listed on the South Carolina chimney services hub.

My Greer house is near the county line. Does that change the chimney cap?

The cap itself is chosen by the chimney, not the county. The county line only matters if a building question comes up, because the City of Greer, Greenville County or Spartanburg County may be the office for your parcel. Your tax record shows which applies.

How often should I check my cap during Greer's leaf season?

Look at it from the ground after leaves drop and again before heavy fireplace use. If smoke starts spilling into the room, stop burning and call 864-727-7460. A cleanable, correctly sized screen makes clogging less likely but does not prevent it entirely.

Can you replace only the rain cap on my sided chimney chase?

Often yes, if the chase cover underneath is sound. If the cover has rusted through or holds standing water, replacing only the termination cap leaves the leak in place. We check both before recommending either.

Do I need a cap if I only burn gas logs in my Greer fireplace?

Yes, an open flue still lets in rain and animals whether you burn wood or gas. The difference is the type of cap. Gas logs in a masonry fireplace and a sealed gas appliance with its own vent are not the same setup, so tell us which you have.

Is a chase cover the same thing as a chimney cap?

No. A chase cover closes the top of a framed chase around the flue pipe, and the chimney cap or termination sits on the pipe itself. They work together and can fail separately.

What if an animal is already living in my Greer chimney?

Do not cap a chimney with an animal inside. SCDNR states that control of wildlife and animal damage in South Carolina is the property owner's responsibility, and it publishes a list of wildlife control operators. Once the flue is clear, a properly screened cap helps keep animals from returning.
