Which Appliances Use Your Anderson Chimney?

A chimney may serve a wood fireplace, a gas log set, a gas furnace, a water heater, or a combination. Each has different cap rules, so start with what you know about the appliances.

If you are not sure, a look at the basement or utility room for a metal vent pipe running into the chimney is a safe way to check from inside.

Wood or gas

Does Your Anderson Home Need a Gas Vent Cap or a Wood Fireplace Chimney Cap?

A wood fireplace flue usually gets a screened cap that blocks rain, animals and embers. A gas appliance vent is different. The 2021 International Residential Code requires gas vents to terminate with a listed cap or a listed roof assembly (2021 International Residential Code, Chapter 24 gas vent termination (G2427.6)). That cap is designed for the vent's exhaust flow, and adding mesh or a decorative hood to it can block the exhaust.

That is why our first question is what each flue serves. We will not put an improvised screen on a gas vent or cap any flue serving a working appliance with something not meant for it.

If a furnace or water heater vent has a damaged or missing cap, stop and call. Exhaust that cannot leave the house properly is a carbon monoxide concern, and the appliance should be checked before it runs again.

Local code

How Do Anderson Building Codes Relate to Chimney Cap Work?

Anderson County Building & Codes handles residential permitting and inspections for unincorporated parts of the county. Its residential documents list adopted codes and state modifications to the 2021 I-Codes, along with a 2021 IRC residential inspection checklist (Anderson County Building & Codes). The cap figures quoted on this page come from the 2021 IRC model text; the county's own adoption and modifications govern actual permits.

Inside the city, City Hall is at 401 Main Street, and the City of Anderson's Planning page publishes complete Historic District Design Guidelines, with sections on rehabilitation of historic resources, additions, and alterations to non-historic buildings (City of Anderson Planning (Historic District Design Guidelines)).

Check with the office that covers your parcel for property-specific approval before the work. If your home is inside a city historic district, read the guidelines or ask the city before choosing a visible cap style.

Fit

How We Fit a Chimney Cap on an Anderson Chimney

Measure every flue

Each flue tile or vent is measured. A multi-flue cap has to clear the tallest flue and give each one enough open area.

Check what holds it

A clamp-on cap needs a sound flue tile. A top-mount cap needs a solid crown. Cracks get flagged before installation.

Separate gas from wood

Where a gas vent shares the chimney top with a fireplace flue, the gas vent keeps its own listed cap.

Signs

When Does an Anderson Chimney Cap Need Replacing?

Anderson homeowners usually notice a cap problem in one of two ways: from the yard, or from the fireplace. Rust holes in the hood, mesh pulled away from the frame, a cap that rocks in the wind, or water in the firebox after storms are the common reasons to replace a cap. A bird or animal getting in despite a cap means there is a gap somewhere.

NOAA's climate summary for South Carolina names severe thunderstorms, mostly in late winter and spring, as a major storm threat (NOAA/NCICS State Climate Summary: South Carolina). After one, check the cap from the ground rather than the roof. Binoculars or a phone camera zoomed from the far side of the street usually give a clear enough view to see a tilted hood or a missing lid, and a photo helps when you call.

Shared chimneys

Anderson Chimney Caps for Chimneys Serving Two Appliances

When a fireplace flue and a gas furnace vent come out of the same chimney top, the cap plan has two parts. The fireplace flue gets a screened chimney cap sized to its tile. The furnace vent keeps the listed cap made for it, with nothing fastened over it.

A single top-mount cap over both is sometimes proposed because it looks tidy. That only works when the gas vent arrangement permits it and the cap gives each flue its required open area, so we check before suggesting it rather than assuming.

Abandoned flues are another case. A flue that served an old furnace, now removed, can be closed or capped differently than a working one. Tell us if appliances have been replaced or removed over the years.

Price

What Affects Chimney Cap Cost in Anderson?

Number of flues, whether any are gas vents that need listed caps, cap metal and the condition of the crown or tile are the main factors. We price after measuring. Our main chimney cap installation guide page compares cap types, and the South Carolina chimney services hub lists related chimney repair services in South Carolina.

Can a chimney cap cause carbon monoxide problems?

The wrong cap can. A cap that blocks a gas appliance's exhaust, or a clogged screen over a flue serving a working appliance, can push combustion gases back into the house. Gas vents should use their listed caps, and any CO alarm should be taken seriously.

Does Anderson County use the 2021 building code?

Anderson County Building & Codes lists state modifications to the 2021 I-Codes and a 2021 IRC inspection checklist among its residential documents. Inside city limits, check with the City of Anderson.

My Anderson home is in a historic district. Can I still get a chimney cap?

Usually the question is style, not whether a cap is allowed. The city publishes Historic District Design Guidelines on its Planning page. Review them or ask the city, then tell us what they require.

My gas logs are in an old brick fireplace. Which cap do I need?

Gas logs installed in a masonry fireplace use the existing chimney flue, which normally takes a regular screened chimney cap. A sealed gas appliance with its own vent pipe is different and needs that vent's listed cap. Tell us which you have.

Can one cap cover my fireplace flue and furnace vent?

Only if the gas vent arrangement allows it and each flue keeps its required open area. In many cases the furnace vent keeps its own listed cap and the fireplace flue gets a separate screened cap. We check before recommending either.

How soon can you look at a damaged cap in Anderson?

Call 864-727-7460 and we will confirm availability for your address. If a gas appliance vent is affected, turn the appliance off until it is checked.
