Tell us whether you are inside town limits or on a county road outside them, if you know. It decides which office you would ask about permits for larger work.
Note the fuel: wood, gas logs, a gas furnace, or a fireplace you no longer light.
864-727-7460 ↗The job of a cap
A chimney cap sits over the flue opening and does three things: it keeps rain out, keeps birds and animals out, and catches sparks before they reach the roof. The Chimney Safety Institute of America homeowner guidance lists those as the functions of a well-designed cap.
Without a cap, the inside of the chimney is exposed every time it rains. Water reaches the damper, which rusts, and the smoke shelf, where it mixes with soot. Leaves and twigs blow in during the fall. An open flue is also an inviting spot for birds and squirrels to nest, which can block the chimney entirely. Fitting a cap is a small job compared to the repairs it prevents.
Town of Central offices
Central has its own Historic Preservation page, Building Permits and Inspections section, and Code Compliance office, all run from Town Hall at 1067 W Main Street.
The town's historic preservation page explains that adopting a preservation ordinance, appointing a commission and designating historic resources protects buildings from inappropriate alterations. The page does not list designated properties. Ask the town whether your scope needs approval, particularly if your house might be designated.
Outside town limits, Pickens County Building Codes handles permits through its EnerGov self-service portal. Crown rebuilds or chase reframing are the projects worth checking with whichever office applies.
Know your chimney
One tile above the crown takes a cap fastened to the tile. Two or more close together may suit a single wide cap over the crown.
That is a chase. It needs a chase cover across the top and a termination cap on the flue pipe that matches the chimney system.
Possibly a gas appliance vent. It needs a cap listed for that vent; never a homemade screen.
Send a photo. We will tell you what you are looking at and what the options are.

Chase covers
A chase cover is the metal lid on a framed chimney. When it rusts or dips in the middle, water pools and can find its way into the framing below, where it leads to rot and stains on interior walls. Rust streaks down the siding beneath the chase top are one outside sign.
A replacement cover is sized to the chase and sloped or crowned so water runs off. Stainless steel resists rust longer than galvanized. The termination cap on the flue pipe is checked at the same time, since it has to match the chimney manufacturer's system.

Stoves and inserts
It can. A wood stove or insert vented into a masonry chimney may run through a stainless liner, and the liner's top plate and cap may be sized and supplied as part of that liner system. Putting a generic tile cap over a liner, or leaving the original cap in place over a new liner, can leave gaps or restrict the flue.
Before recommending anything, we ask what was installed and when, and we look at how the liner ends at the top. If the stove or insert came with manufacturer instructions, keep them handy for the call. Screen clogging from creosote is also something we discuss, since the cap must stay removable for sweeping.
How we work
After a phone consultation, our technician measures each flue or the full chase top and checks for cracked crowns, loose tile or a rusted cover. You hear the recommendation and approve it before the cap goes on. The cap is anchored to resist wind and stays removable so the chimney can be swept later. If the crown is cracked, you choose whether to repair it first or cap now.
Anything else we saw is explained separately, so you can decide about it on your own schedule. Ask at booking if you want photos for your records.
Cost factors
The main factors are how many flues need covering, whether a single cap fits or a crown-wide cap is needed, chase dimensions for framed chimneys, metal choice, roof height and pitch, and any repair before installation. Our chimney cap installation guide page goes deeper on styles. To discuss your chimney, call 864-727-7460.

For addresses inside town limits, contact Central Town Hall at 1067 W Main Street, which handles building permits and inspections. Outside town limits, Pickens County Building Codes handles permits. Ask the office that covers your address whether your scope needs approval.
Only if your property has been designated, and the town's page does not list designated properties. Call Town Hall if you think it might be. Being an older house does not by itself make it designated.
Rust streaks can mean the metal cover is corroding. Water can then pool on top and leak into the framing. A replacement cover in stainless steel generally lasts longer.
Yes, with a cap listed for that vent type. Gas vents must terminate with listed caps under the 2021 International Residential Code, a model code. Generic mesh caps are not a substitute.
The time depends on roof access, the number of flues, and whether any repair is needed first. A straightforward single-flue cap is a short visit. We give you a clearer idea after reviewing your photo.
Possibly not in its current form. An insert with a liner may need a cap that fits the liner's top, not the old tile cap. We check the liner termination and tell you what fits.
