Discuss a Chimney Cap for Your Piedmont Home
Piedmont is an unincorporated community that straddles a county line, so the street address matters more here than the town name. Give us the full address and we will work from that.
Tell us what the chimney vents and how many openings are on top. A photo from the yard is plenty.

Which County Handles a Chimney Cap Project in Piedmont?
The Census Bureau lists Piedmont as a census designated place in both Anderson County and Greenville County. It has no city government, so county offices handle building questions.
On the Anderson County side, the Anderson County Building & Codes department runs building, electrical, mechanical and plumbing permits through an online OpenGov portal and publishes a guide to which permits are required. On the Greenville County side, the county Permit Center processes residential permit applications. Ask the county that covers your parcel whether your scope needs approval.
That question matters most if your project grows into rebuilding the crown or replacing chase framing. A Piedmont mailing address alone does not tell you that, and we confirm it from the address before any paperwork question comes up.
What the cap is for
Why Put a Chimney Cap on a Piedmont Chimney?
A cap keeps rain out of the flue, blocks birds and animals, and stops embers from landing on the roof. Those are the three functions the Chimney Safety Institute of America lists for a well-designed cap. Without one, rain runs straight down onto the damper and into the firebox, and an open flue is an easy nesting spot.
A cap does not fix every chimney leak. Stains on a ceiling or wall beside the chimney can come from flashing or the crown as well, and we point that out if we see it.
When water is the complaint, the pattern helps. Water only in the firebox after straight-down rain points toward an open flue. Staining on the ceiling or the wall beside the chimney, or water that shows up during wind-driven storms, points more toward flashing or a cracked crown. We sort that out on the visit rather than selling a cap that will not fix the leak.
Designated historic properties
Do Historic Rules Apply to a Chimney Cap in Piedmont?
Only for specific designated properties, and only where the county says so. Greenville County's historic preservation program lists the Piedmont YWCA at 7 Piedmont Avenue among its designated sites, and the county Historic Preservation Commission reviews construction on designated properties and in designated districts.
That listing covers that property. It does not make every Piedmont house subject to review, and we do not suggest it does. If you own a property you believe is designated, tell us, and check with the county before exterior work.
Cap choices
What Chimney Cap Options Work for Piedmont Homes?
Read the top of your chimney from the yard first; it narrows the choice before we measure.
If clay tiles stick up out of a concrete or mortar slab, you have a masonry chimney. One tile can take a cap that clamps to that tile. Two or three tiles side by side may suit one wider cap that covers the whole crown, provided the crown is solid and the tiles do not stand at very different heights.
If the chimney is a box covered in siding, with a flat or sloped metal top and a round pipe in the middle, it is a chase around a factory-built fireplace. The metal top is the chase cover, and the pipe needs a termination cap made for that chimney system. Rust spots or a sagging center on the cover are reasons to have it checked.
A thin metal pipe with a small cone or round cap on top may be a gas appliance vent. That cap must be listed for the vent under the 2021 International Residential Code, a model code,, so we never swap in a generic screen.

How the work goes
What Does a Piedmont Chimney Cap Visit Include?
Before anyone drives out, we confirm the address and look at your photo, so the technician arrives with an idea of the cap style and the likely size range. On site, every flue opening is measured, since stock sizes do not fit every tile, and the crown or chase cover gets checked for cracks, rust and pooled water.
You hear the recommendation before the cap is fastened. Once it is on, it is anchored to resist wind but stays removable so a sweep can clean the flue later. Anything else we noticed, such as cracked crown mortar or loose flashing, is explained separately so you can decide on it without pressure. Ask at booking if you want photos for your records.
Cost
What Affects Chimney Cap Installation Cost in Piedmont?
Number and size of flues, the cap style and metal, roof access, and any repair the crown needs before a cap can be secured all move the price. A chase cover is sized to the full top of the chase, so it is quoted differently from a cap on a single clay tile. Our chimney cap installation guide guide explains styles in more depth. For your house, call 864-727-7460 or send the form with a photo.

Is Piedmont a city with its own permit office?
Piedmont has no municipal government; the Census treats it as a designated place spread across Anderson and Greenville counties. That leaves building questions with the county your parcel sits in.
How do I find out which county my Piedmont house is in?
Your property tax bill or county parcel record shows it. We also check it from the street address during the consultation. It only matters if your project ends up needing a permit.
Does the Piedmont YWCA designation affect my house?
Not unless your property is designated itself. Greenville County lists specific designated sites, and review applies to those properties and designated districts. If you think your property is designated, check with the county before exterior work.
Can a chimney cap stop rain from leaking into my fireplace?
Partly. Rain dropping down an open flue is one route into the firebox, and a cap closes it. Wind-driven water through flashing or a cracked crown is another, so we inspect those before promising a cap will end the leak.
What cap do I need for a gas furnace vent pipe?
A cap listed for that type of vent, which the 2021 International Residential Code, a model code, calls for. Homemade screens or mismatched caps can block the vent. We check the vent type before recommending anything.
