Before You Call About a Travelers Rest Chimney Cap

Note whether trees hang over or near the roof, whether you burn wood often, and whether you have seen leaves, nesting material or water in the firebox.

Those three things, debris, use and water, decide most of the cap choice for a Travelers Rest home before we even measure.

Rainfall

Why Does Rain Protection Matter for a Travelers Rest Chimney Cap?

Rainfall in South Carolina rises toward the mountains. NOAA's state climate summary explains that the far northwest gets the highest totals, more than 80 inches a year near Lake Jocassee, because of orographic enhancement as air rises on the upwind side of the mountains, while most of the Upstate falls between 45 and 55 inches (NOAA/NCICS State Climate Summary: South Carolina).

We are not claiming a specific rainfall figure for Travelers Rest. The point is that any open flue in the Upstate takes on a lot of water over a year, and a cap with a good overhang is the simplest way to stop rain falling straight down the flue onto the damper.

The State Climatology Office adds that northwestern South Carolina gets more precipitation in winter than in summer. Winter is fireplace season, so a missing cap shows up as a wet, smoky fire at the worst time.

Leaves and soot

Chimney Cap Screens That Can Be Cleaned in Travelers Rest

A screen that blocks embers and animals will also catch leaves, seed pods and soot. The 2021 International Residential Code handles this directly: spark arrestor screen openings must be between 3/8 and 1/2 inch, and the screen or cap must be removable to allow cleaning of the chimney flue (2021 International Residential Code, Chapter 10 (R1003.9.1 caps, R1003.9.2 spark arrestors)).

For a house with trees close by, those two rules point to a cap with mesh at the upper end of that range and a lid that hinges or lifts off. Finer mesh clogs faster and can choke the draft. A fixed cap that has to be unbolted makes every future sweep slower.

Overhanging limbs are a separate issue from the cap. Branches that rub the chimney can bend a cap or damage the crown, and they drop debris right onto the screen. Trimming them is work for a tree service, not something to try from the roof yourself.

Wildlife

Can a Chimney Cap Keep Animals Out in Travelers Rest?

Birds, squirrels and raccoons look for sheltered openings, and an uncapped flue is one. We do not have local data on how often that happens in Travelers Rest, but the fix is the same everywhere: a fastened cap with intact, code-sized mesh.

If an animal is inside now, it has to leave or be removed first. SCDNR states that controlling wildlife and animal damage in South Carolina is the responsibility of the individual property owner and keeps a list of wildlife control operators (SCDNR Problem (Nuisance) Wildlife). Never cap over an occupied flue.

City details

Do Travelers Rest Permits or Historic Rules Affect Chimney Caps?

The City of Travelers Rest posts its permits, forms and applications on one page, most of them fillable. Addresses outside city limits fall under Greenville County. Check with the office for your address about property-specific approval.

The city's history page describes the town as a resting place for people traveling between the mountains and the coast, growing with the railroad and later the highways. Greenville County's historic list includes the Goodwin House and Office at 782 State 11 and the Spring Park Inn in Travelers Rest. If your property is individually designated, check with the county before changing visible rooftop features.

Sided chimneys

Chase Covers on Travelers Rest Homes With Factory-Built Fireplaces

Not every chimney here is brick. A framed chase with siding has a metal chase cover on top and a termination cap on the flue pipe. Leaves and pine needles collecting on a flat cover hold moisture against the metal and speed rust, so a sloped or crowned cover sheds debris better.

On the pipe itself, the termination has to belong to the same prefabricated system as the fireplace below; a rating label inside the unit names it.

What Affects Chimney Cap Cost in Travelers Rest?

Mesh gauge, a hinged lid, single or multi-flue design, metal, and any crown or chase cover repair all affect price. Roof pitch and height decide the access setup. We price after measuring. What mesh size is best for a Travelers Rest chimney cap?

Code allows spark arrestor openings between 3/8 and 1/2 inch. Near trees, the larger end of that range clogs less while still blocking embers and animals. We choose within that range based on what burns in the flue.

Do leaves clog chimney caps?

They can, along with soot on wood-burning flues. A clogged screen restricts draft and can push smoke into the room. A removable or hinged lid makes cleaning during a sweep straightforward.

Should I trim trees before getting a chimney cap?

If branches touch or hang over the chimney, trimming helps protect the cap and crown and cuts down debris. Hire a tree service for that work. We can install the cap before or after.

Is Travelers Rest wetter than Greenville?

We do not have a published rainfall comparison for the two. NOAA notes that South Carolina's totals increase toward the northwest mountains. Either way, an Upstate chimney without a cap takes on a lot of water.

Can a cap go on while animals are nesting in my chimney?

No. Capping an occupied flue traps the animal. Have it removed or wait until it leaves, then cap the chimney promptly. SCDNR places wildlife control on the property owner.

Can I buy a cap and have you install it?

We prefer to measure first, because a cap bought before measuring often does not fit the flue or meet the open-area rule. If you already have one, tell us the make and size when you call 864-727-7460. We will tell you whether it suits the chimney.

Does a gas fireplace in Travelers Rest need a mesh cap?

A direct-vent or vented gas appliance terminates with the listed cap made for it, and extra mesh should not be added. Gas logs burning in a masonry fireplace use the fireplace flue and its regular chimney cap. Tell us which setup you have.
