The City of Greenville lists several designated historic districts, and a visible rooftop change on a house inside one can raise design questions before any cap goes on.
The city's historic districts page names Colonel Elias Earle, East Park Avenue, Hampton-Pinckney, Heritage, Overbrook, Pettigru and West End. It notes that the Pettigru Street district, east of downtown, contains 88 structures, that West End was established as a historic district in 1993, and that City Council designated the Heritage neighborhood a local preservation overlay in December 2001. The city also runs a Historic Review Board.
We do not decide whether your address needs review. If the house is inside one of those districts, check with the City of Greenville before the work, and tell us what you learn. A low-profile black cap and a tall decorative copper cap read very differently from the sidewalk, so knowing the district's expectations early saves ordering the wrong style.
Most Greenville addresses are not in a district at all. For those, the cap choice comes down to the flue, the crown and the fuel, covered below.
