The build year is a quick clue. It hints at whether we are likely looking at a brick fireplace with a clay tile, a factory-built fireplace in a sided chase, or a chimney that has been relined or altered since.
We still confirm on the roof, because additions and remodels change chimneys. Tell us about any past chimney work you know of.
864-727-7460 ↗A long building history
The City of Mauldin's own history starts with a 100-acre land grant in 1784, notes the train depot built after Lt. Gov. W.L. Mauldin helped bring the railroad through, and records the town's reincorporation in 1910 (City of Mauldin history). The city today describes itself as a community of more than 30,000 residents that grew from a quiet railroad stop.
We do not have a source on what share of Mauldin houses are brick or framed, and we will not pretend to. What that long history does mean is that a cap request here can involve almost any chimney type, so we never assume one standard cap before seeing the flue.
Draft
A cap that is too small or has fine mesh can make a fireplace smoky. Size is a safety question, not only a fit question.
The 2021 International Residential Code sets the rule for spark arrestor caps on masonry chimneys: the open area of the screen must be at least four times the open area of the flue outlet (2021 International Residential Code, Chapter 10 (R1003.9.1 caps, R1003.9.2 spark arrestors)). The same section limits mesh openings to between 3/8 and 1/2 inch, which keeps embers and animals out while letting smoke through.
In practice that means a larger flue needs a taller or wider cap, and a cap sized for a small flue should not go on a large one. If a fireplace started smoking into the room right after a cap was added, an undersized screen is one of the first things to rule out.
Wood and gas differ here too. Gas vents terminate with a listed cap made for that vent, and a mesh screen should never be added over a gas appliance's vent.
Options
Fastens to the outside of one clay tile. Quick to fit when the tile is sound and stands a few inches above the crown.
Covers the crown and all flues under one hood. Needs a crown in good condition and careful sizing for the largest flue.
Matches the fireplace maker's pipe. The model plate inside the fireplace opening tells us which part fits.
Closes a framed chase top around the flue pipe. Built to the measured chase size, then paired with the termination cap.

Clues indoors
You can learn a lot about the cap without leaving the living room. Rust flakes or water drops on the damper plate after rain mean water is coming straight down the flue. Leaves, twigs or feathers on the smoke shelf mean the screen has a gap. A strong campfire odor on humid days often comes from soot dampened by rain that a cap would have kept out.
Shine a flashlight up from the firebox only with the fire fully out and cold, and only if the damper opens easily. If you see daylight with nothing between you and the sky, there is no cap. If you see nesting material, call before burning anything.
Write down what you find and when it happens, such as only after storms from the west or only in winter. Those notes help us decide whether the cap, the crown or the flashing is the likely source.
City or county
Addresses inside Mauldin city limits deal with the city; addresses outside them deal with Greenville County Building Safety. The city publishes its code of ordinances through Municode. Check with the office that covers your address for property-specific approval.
If a cap visit turns up a cracked crown or a rotted chase that needs rebuilding, ask about permits before that larger repair.
Price
Flue size and count, cap style, metal and any crown or chase repair are the main factors. Roof height and pitch change the access setup. We measure and then give you the price for that scope.
Our main chimney cap installation guide page goes deeper on cap styles, and the South Carolina chimney services hub covers related chimney repairs we discuss across South Carolina.

An undersized cap or overly fine mesh can restrict draft. Code calls for the cap's screen area to be at least four times the flue outlet area. Stop using the fireplace and call 864-727-7460 so we can check the size.
Not because of age alone. What matters is the flue's shape, size and condition and whether the crown can hold a cap. An old clay tile with cracks may need repair before a cap is clamped to it.
No. Gas vents terminate with listed caps designed for that vent, and adding mesh can block exhaust. If your gas vent cap is damaged, it should be replaced with the correct listed part.
Greenville County property records and your closing documents usually list it. If you do not know, describe the chimney instead and we will take it from there.
We need to see it first. An unlined masonry flue raises questions beyond the cap, and a cap fastened to deteriorating brick may not hold. If lining or masonry work is needed, we will explain it before installing anything.
A securely fastened cap with intact mesh keeps raccoons and other animals from entering the flue. If one is already inside, it needs to be removed before capping; SCDNR states wildlife control is the property owner's responsibility. We install the cap once the flue is clear.
