Tell us if your street lies between Church Street and the Sampit River, and between Wood Street and Meeting Street. Those streets bound the City's Historic Buildings District, and an address inside it should start with a question to the City.
A photo of the chimney with the roof and front of the house in frame helps us suggest a cap that suits the building.
864-727-7460 ↗Historic Buildings District
The City's Architectural Review Board page describes the Historic Buildings District as bounded by Church Street to the north, the Sampit River to the south, Wood Street to the west and Meeting Street to the east, covering residential, commercial and waterfront properties.
The page does not say whether a chimney cap needs Board review. We make no claim either way. If your property is inside those bounds, ask City planning staff before ordering a cap. If review applies, ask us whether the style, dimensions, metal and attachment can be supplied in writing. The City of Georgetown Architectural Review Board has the City's description.
Chimney placement
The City's 2003 waterfront design guidelines describe building types using floor plan, height and, in some cases, roof shape and the location of chimneys. That tells us chimneys are part of how the guidelines read a building's type. For an owner, it is a reason to keep the chimney's outline close to what it is now. A low-profile cap that sits tight to the flue tile changes the silhouette least, and a clamp-on mount leaves the masonry untouched. Where several flues rise from one stack, we can show you how one wide cap compares in outline with individual caps before anything is ordered.

Salt and river air
Georgetown sits at the head of tidal water, and the Census Gazetteer lists about 0.6 square mile of water inside city limits. Moist, salty air shortens galvanized cap life. Stainless steel generally resists that corrosion better, and copper does not rust, weathering to a brown or green patina. On a historic house, copper is a common choice for looks; stainless is the cost-conscious one. Fasteners must match the cap metal so the screws do not corrode first.
Coastal storms
The NOAA and NCICS State Climate Summary counts 168 tropical cyclones or their remnants affecting South Carolina from 1900 to 2024, 42 of them hurricanes. A cap is only as secure as its mounting. Clamp-on caps depend on a sound, projecting flue tile. Crown-mounted caps need a crown that can hold anchors. We choose the method after inspecting the top and tighten to the cap maker's instructions. After a storm, check from the yard that the cap is still in place and straight.
Multiple flues
We count and identify every flue first. Wood-burning and unused flues can share a wide cap if they sit close together and the cap clears the tallest tile. Gas appliance vents keep the caps their appliance listings call for. On a historic chimney, one wide cap may look neater than three separate ones, but the reviewers' view, if review applies, comes first.
Before the cap
If mortar at the top has washed out or the crown has cracked, yes. A cap anchored into failing masonry loosens and lets water in around it. Repairs inside the Historic Buildings District may also need City review. Our South Carolina chimney services hub describes the masonry side of cap work.
Pricing
Each quote starts with measurements. Flue count and size come first; a wide cap over several flues costs more than a single small one, though less than three separate caps in some cases. The metal is the next factor, with copper above stainless and stainless above galvanized. Custom sizes for odd or very large flues add fabrication time. Access matters on tall or steep roofs. Masonry repairs found at the top are listed separately. If a historic review is needed, the time it takes does not change the price, but a change in the requested style can.

The district is described by its bounding streets, and Front Street runs through that part of town. Lot lines decide district status, so confirm with City planning. We do not determine it.
Check with the City for your address and the scope of the job. Staff can tell you whether a material is preferred for chimneys in the Historic Buildings District. Ask before ordering, because a custom copper cap is harder to change once made.
A clamp-on cap comes off without damage to brick. Crown-mounted caps leave small anchor holes. That reversibility is one reason we suggest clamp-on mounting on historic chimneys where possible.
Look at it from the ground each year and after strong storms. Rust streaks, a tilted lid or torn mesh are signs to call. A chimney sweep can check it during routine cleaning.
No. The City was founded in 1729, according to Georgetown County, but homes range widely in age. We inspect each chimney rather than assuming its age or construction.
No cap blocks air, and that is by design, since smoke has to leave. What a cap does is keep rain and spray from running straight down the flue. Choosing stainless or copper keeps the cap itself from rusting out quickly.
Only if review applies to your project, and then the timing depends on the City's process. Ask staff when you contact them. We schedule once you have an answer.
