Birds
Some chimney-nesting birds are protected while nesting, so nests may have to wait until the birds leave. The cap goes on after.

If you hear scratching or chirping in the chimney, tell us before we schedule. An animal in the flue changes the order of the work, and we never cap a flue with an animal inside.
Include your address so we can confirm whether it is inside the City of Conway or in unincorporated Horry County. That decides which office handles any permit question.

Possibly, if the building is in one of them. The City of Conway Community Appearance Board page says the board protects the appearance and character of development in the Main Street Corridor Historic Design Review District, the Downtown Commercial Historic Design Review District, and the Waccamaw Riverfront district. Those are largely commercial areas. If your building sits in one of them, ask the city planning staff before changing anything visible on the roof.
For permits, the city's City of Conway Construction Services department enforces state and local building codes, reviews building plans and issues permits. Call it with a description of the job if you want to know whether a cap replacement needs one. Addresses outside city limits, even with a Conway mailing address in ZIP areas 29526 or 29527, go to Horry County instead.
Wildlife
An open flue looks like a hollow tree to birds, squirrels and raccoons. A screened cap closes it. The Chimney Safety Institute of America homeowner guidance names keeping animals out as one of the main reasons to cap a chimney.

Can chew through thin or rusted mesh. A stainless screen holds up better.
Strong enough to pry a loose cap. Sound anchor points matter.
The animal must leave or be removed safely first. Capping an occupied flue traps it.

Rain
Conway is in the Coastal Plain, where the State Climatology Office reports rainfall averaging 50 to 52 inches a year. Much of that lands straight down an uncapped flue. Water rusts the damper and firebox, wets the smoke chamber mortar, and mixes with soot to make a sour smell in damp weather. A cap with a solid lid turns most of it away.
Older brick
On any older brick chimney, we check the crown, the flue tile and the mortar joints near the top before picking a cap. Thin mortar crowns crack and loose tiles shift. If the tile is sound, a single flue cap clamps to it. If it is uneven or missing, an outside-mount cap that wraps the top of the brick works better. A chimney with no liner needs a relining conversation before regular use.

Inland storms
Yes. Tropical storms lose some strength inland but still bring wind and heavy rain, and statewide records count 168 tropical cyclones or their remnants since 1900. After a major storm, look at the cap from the ground for tilt or missing pieces, and check the firebox for water. Do not use the fireplace until a damaged top is fixed.
Process
Confirm no animals are inside, or wait for them to leave.
Crown, tile and mortar at the top.
Single, outside-mount or multi-flue, in stainless or copper.
Secured as the cap maker directs and the screen checked.

Cost factors
Cost depends on the flue and what is happening in it. If an animal or nesting birds must leave first, the install waits. Flue count, crown condition, cap material and roof access set the rest. We explain each factor before scheduling.
Materials
In most cases, yes. Conway is inland from the beach, so salt spray is less of a factor than it is on the oceanfront, but heavy year-round rain still wears through galvanized coatings. Stainless costs more up front and lasts much longer. Black powder-coated stainless blends with dark roofs, and copper is chosen mainly for appearance. Fasteners should match the cap, since a stainless cap held by plain steel screws loosens as the screws rust.
Appliance vents
Usually not. A gas furnace or water heater vent ends in a listed vent cap that belongs to the appliance system. Covering it with a fireplace cap or a shared hood can upset draft and trap exhaust. We fit the fireplace cap separately, or use a multi-flue hood only where every flue under it allows it.
Caps, covers and access
Discuss your chimney top before scheduling.

Yes. Water rusts dampers and fireboxes and soaks mortar. A capped flue turns most rain away. It also mixes with soot and can cause a sour smell in damp weather. In Conway's Coastal Plain rainfall, a capped flue stays much drier between sweeps.
A single flue cap on a sound tile, or an outside-mount cap where tiles are uneven. Unlined flues need relining before regular use. We check the crown first.
Yes, a fastened screened cap closes the flue. Any animal already inside must leave first. Protected nesting birds may have to finish nesting before the cap goes on.
Yes. Inland storms still bring strong wind and heavy rain. Look for a tilted or missing cap from the ground and water in the firebox. Stay off the roof and call us to look at anything that seems damaged.
Yes. On a framed chase, we replace rusted or sagging covers with a stainless one sized to the full top. The round termination on the factory-built flue stays the manufacturer's listed model.
